Where Did It Begin?
BNI's origins go back to 1985 in Southern California where Dr. Ivan R Misner was looking for the best way to generate new business for his consulting company. Dr. Misner invited several friends, each representing a different business, together to explore ways of helping each find new business. Ten years later, in 1995, BNI had evolved into a Franchise business with Don and Nancy Morgan developing the BNI Franchise for Canada and shortly after, in the Northern Illinois regions.

Don and Nancy assembled a team of founding Directors in Canada and Illinois to begin the building process. Following the time tested process of word-of-mouth marketing, BNI quickly grew coast-to-coast in Canada and throughout Chicagoland and Northern Illinois regions. To help increase marketing exposure for all members, the Morgans later included the region of Central South West Wisconsin to the BNI Marketing Program.

Now, the BNI Marketing Program extends throughout Northern Illinois and into the Madison and surrounding areas. These regions are guided by three BNI Executive Directors, Peggy Nuelle, Tom Gosche and Alana McKinney. The head office for BNI Marketing is located in Roselle, Illinois.

BNI Directors have added more to the word-of-mouth referral marketing data base than ANY OTHER organization or company. During the past eleven years, an average of one book per year was written and published about success through referral marketing by BNI Directors. Two of those books actually made their way to the Best Sellers List. This helps reassure members that they are getting the most up-to-date knowledge and understanding about generating business through referrals.

In 1996, the UK/European and Australian BNI operations were formed, which marked the beginning of BNI's expansion across five continents. Now with more than 3,800 local business referral chapters and 75,000 members, BNI clearly deserves the title of "Global Leader in the Industry of Word-of-Mouth Referral Marketing."

Currently, there are more than 150 BNI chapters operating throughout Illinois and Wisconsin with more developing every month. Each chapter is supervised by a professional staff team consisting of BNI Director, Ambassador and locally trained executive group.
